Mechanical properties of cellular materials
نویسنده
چکیده
Materials with cellular structure occur widely in nature. This seminar discusses the mechanical models of two and three dimensional cellular solids. We introduce the honeycomb-like structure of wood and the foam-like structure of the trabecular bone. The third example of cellular material, glass sponge Euplectella sp., is presented as well.

Nanofibrillated chitosan/polycaprolactone bionanocomposite scaffold with improved tensile strength and cellular behavior
Objective(s): Fabrication of scaffolds with improved mechanical properties and favorable cellular compatibility is crucial for many tissue engineering applications. This study was aimed to improve mechanical and biological properties of polycaprolactone (PCL), which is a common biocompatible and biodegradable synthetic polymer in tissue engineering. Nanofibrillated chitosan (NC) was used as a n...
متن کاملMechanical properties of CNT reinforced nano-cellular polymeric nanocomposite foams
Mechanics of CNT-reinforced nano-cellular PMMA nanocomposites are investigated using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. Firstly, static uniaxial stretching of bulk PMMA polymer is simulated and the results are compared with literature. Then, nano-cellular foams with different relative densities are constructed and subjected to static uniaxial stretching and obtained stress-strain cu...

Reducing mass without sacrificing mechanical integrity and performance is a critical goal in a vast range of applications. Introducing a controlled amount of porosity in a strong and dense material (hence fabricating a cellular solid) is an obvious avenue to weight reduction. The mechanical effectiveness of this strategy, though, depends strongly on the architecture of the resulting cellular ma...
متن کاملShape morphing Kirigami mechanical metamaterials
Mechanical metamaterials exhibit unusual properties through the shape and movement of their engineered subunits. This work presents a new investigation of the Poisson's ratios of a family of cellular metamaterials based on Kirigami design principles. Kirigami is the art of cutting and folding paper to obtain 3D shapes. This technique allows us to create cellular structures with engineered cuts ...
متن کاملMechanical behavior of regular open-cell porous biomaterials made of diamond lattice unit cells.
Cellular structures with highly controlled micro-architectures are promising materials for orthopedic applications that require bone-substituting biomaterials or implants. The availability of additive manufacturing techniques has enabled manufacturing of biomaterials made of one or multiple types of unit cells. The diamond lattice unit cell is one of the relatively new types of unit cells that ...
